Cesar Chavez

CÉSAR CHÁVEZ (1927-1993)

Granja = farm

Mexican-American farmworker, labour leader y activista de las derechas civiles, César Chávez brought about mejores condiciones for agricultural workers. Born en la granja de su familia near Yuma, Arizona, Chávez witnessed the harsh conditions sufridos by workers on granjas.

Mejorar = to improve
Habitualmente explotado por sus empleadores, they were often unpaid, living in shacks a cambio de their labour, without servicios básicos. Without a united voice, they had no means para mejorar su posición.
Chávez cambió eso when he dedicated his life to winning reconocimiento for the rights of workers agrícolas, inspiring and organizing them into the National Granja Workers Association, which later became the United Granja Workers.
Through marches, strikes and y boicots, Chávez obligó a los empleadores a pagar adequate wages and provide otros beneficios and was responsable de la legislación enacting the first Bill of Rights for workers agrícolas.

Más alto = highest
For his commitment to la justicia social and his lifelong dedicación to bettering the lives of others, Chávez was posthumously recognized with el más alto honor civil, la Medalla Presidencial de la libertad.

Una semana = a week

National Farmworker Awareness Week (NFAW) es una semana nacional de acción for students y miembros de la comunidad to raise awareness about granja worker issues.
Every year, NFAW takes place during the week of Cesar Chavez’ birthday , 31 de marzo, to honor his legacy as a líder del movimiento of granja workers.

Trabajadores = workers
Los trabajadores agrícolas have the lowest annual family incomes of any U.S. workers. They are excluidos de la mayoría of minimum wage and hour garantías, and do not have the right to overtime pay.

Tales como = such as
Los trabajadores agrícolas are exposed to pesticidas tóxicos, which have been linked to health problems incluyendo problemas reproductivos, birth defects, and varias condiciones tales como cáncer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.

Esclavitud = slavery
There have been multiple recognized casos de esclavitud moderna in the fields in the United States. Trabajadores agrícolas living in indentured servitude are held as esclavos through threats, violencia, coerción y manipulación.
Los trabajadores agrícolas often live in substandard housing with unsanitary condiciones. En muchos casos, the property owner has a monopoly on the housing, which allows him or her to charge precios altos in rent for these poor living conditions.
Children as young as 12 can be contratados para la granja work according to federal law. Farm workers as young as 16 perform dangerous tasks que están legalmente prohibidos en otras industrias.

Alrededor = around
Los niños de familias de trabajadores migrantes have the lowest high school graduation rate in the country, alrededor del 10%. Many must work to help a sus padres make ends meet, and they change schools every time que su familia travels for seasonal work.

Problemas graves = serious problems
Campesinas, farm worker women often bear the biggest burden. Exposure to pesticidas tóxicas can lead to a la infertilidad, miscarriage, low birth weight, y defectos congénitos. Violencia doméstica and sexual harassment are widely acknowledged by granja worker women as graves problemas que enfrentan.
Farm workers están excluidos de muchas protecciones as well as the National Labor Relations Act (que protege workers who join unions) and most of the Fair Labor Standards Act (which provides workers with salario mínimo, overtime pay, and safety protecciones).

Ahora más que nunca = now more than ever
Most farm workers also lack de protecciones laborales básicas such as workers’ compensation, health insurance and disability insurance.  Necesitan a una persona como Cesar Chavez ahora más que nunca.

We must admit our lives are all that really belong to us.

Debemos admitir que nuestras vidas son todo lo que realmente nos pertenecen.

So it is how we use our lives that determines the kind of people we are.

Así es cómo utilizamos nuestras vidas que determina el tipo de personas que somos.

The fight is never about grapes or lettuce.

La lucha nunca es uva o lechuga.

It is always about people.

And finalmente, his thoughts about language.

Our language is the reflection of ourselves.

Nuestra lengua es el reflejo de nosotros mismos.

A language is an exact reflection of the character and growth of its speakers.

Una lengua es un reflejo exacto del carácter y el crecimiento de sus hablantes.
